...Apparently there are extra islands coded in, hidden inside the game's code.

The Sevii Isle 8 and 9 articles talk about those areas (they even have map data o_O;) and the Sevii Islands article states that there was an area in the game's code called "Sevii Island 22", "Sevii Island 23" and "Sevii Island 24".
